When winter hits and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't producing heat, most of them can be traced back to a lack of regular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace issues are not taken care of, your system could suddenly stop operating and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a couple warning signs you can be on the lookout for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system stops running.

Furnace Age

The average life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a good idea to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make on the fly. Give yourself plenty of time to look through and weigh all of your options.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they age and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been appropriately maintained. Imagine the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be going towards purchasing a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last few years of a furnace's life are when your system incurs the most breakdowns. Take a moment to add up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the prior two years - a new system may be more cost efficient.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any strange noises coming from your system? Furnaces start making strange noises around the end of their lifespan. If your furnace is turning on and off frequently or blowing cold air, it's time to think about getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home all that well. Your home could start feeling stuffy and anyone in the home with allergies might notice an uptick in their symptoms. Some other red flags are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.

If any of these red flags sound like what you are undergoing with your furnace, it might be time to start thinking about a new system.
