Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

January 05, 2016

When winter hits and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't creating heat, most of them can be traced back to irregular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace problems are not taken care of, your system could suddenly stop operating and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a couple warning signs you can be on the lookout for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system stops running.

Furnace Age

The average life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make on the fly. Give yourself plenty of time to research and weigh all of your options.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they age and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been appropriately maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be going towards purchasing a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last few years of a furnace's life are when your system ends up with the most breakdowns. Take a moment to add up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the last two years - a new system might be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any weird noises coming from your system? Furnaces start making strange noises around the end of their life. If your furnace is cycling on and off frequently or blowing cold air, it's time to think about getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home very well. Your home may start feeling stuffy and anyone in the home with allergies might notice an uptick in their symptoms. Some other red flags are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
